Activities & Meetings
All of our chapter activities, including presentations and meetings, are open to anyone. Our mission is to engage the public in learning about and understanding the American Revolution as an event of seminal importance to the establishment and continuation of democratic societies and constitutional republics around the world.
Chapter Meetings & Presentations
While the New Jersey Society Sons of the American Revolution meets, sponsors, and participates in events throughout the year, the West Fields Chapter itself meets three to four times annually. A March meeting typically includes a banquet with awards presentations and a featured speaker. Meetings generally include presentations on topics of particular interest to our members. Professional historians, reenactors, and chapter members are all welcome to present on subjects related to the American Revolution and their own specific interests. Recent topics have included the Battles of Connecticut Farms and Springfield, a historic mural depicting the Battle of Spanktown that once hung in a Rahway bank, a biographical presentation on Brigadier General Charles Lee, and the experiences of Black soldiers in the Continental Army. Announcements of each meeting are sent to members in advance and are also publicized online.

NJSSAR Color Guard
Members are encouraged to consider joining the New Jersey Society Color Guard, a uniformed group that performs ceremonies throughout the state commemorating anniversaries of important events of the Revolutionary War. Many members enjoy wearing the uniforms of their patriot ancestors at parades, public events, National Society meetings, United States naturalization ceremonies, grave dedications, school programs, and other occasions. Uniforms worn by Color Guard members are most commonly those of the New Jersey 3rd Regiment, known as the New Jersey “Grays,” though they may also reflect the wide variety of uniforms worn by Revolutionary War soldiers. Some members wear Continental Army uniforms, while others wear the clothing of militia soldiers. Members may also demonstrate period flintlock muzzle-loading muskets, such as the Brown Bess or Charleville. All chapter members are welcome to join the Color Guard, and uniforms for these activities are provided.
