Membership Eligibility

Any male who is a lineal descendant of an ancestor who supported the war for American Independence is eligible for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution. These ancestors are referred to as Revolutionary War Patriots and include individuals who fought in the military or militia, provided supplies or services to the American cause, served on political bodies supporting the Revolution, or signed oaths of support and performed similar patriotic acts. Assistance is available to help prospective members with the application process.

Evidence and Documentation Requirements

Family tradition regarding an ancestor’s service will not be considered proof. No preliminary decision will be given with respect to a line of descent, an ancestor’s service, or whether proposed evidence is acceptable. When properly examined in context with all available evidence, preliminary assumptions may prove to be incorrect, and the Sons of the American Revolution will not participate in rendering improperly formed evidentiary decisions. The Sons of the American Revolution reserves the right to accept or reject any evidence submitted.

How to Apply for Membership

Individuals who are close to having, or who already have, complete and detailed genealogical documentation proving descent from a Revolutionary War Patriot may apply directly through the New Jersey Society
